I’ve read this wonderful quote which goes something like this:
There is no GREATER love than this than a man lay down his life for a friend. 1
And the word greater itself shows that there is somewhat a comparison when it comes to love. There is a lesser love and a greater love, which one do you have? You see, we can all agree with the saying; stated another way:
The greatest kind of love one can experience is selfless surrendering of one’s life for the benefit of another.
Remember this: Love is great. Another saying says that no matter what may happen in his life, there are three things that he has that no one can ever take away. Quoting him:
“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” 2
Love is not just eternal, it is the greatest eternal gift we can ever give and receive. And who better a model than Jesus Christ Himself. Not everyone may believe that he is a God but no one can deny how much he loved the people around him, regardless of his background or position in the society.
Charles Templeton, a profound atheist even said this about Jesus: “He was the greatest human being who has ever lived… His commitment was total and led to his own death, much to the detriment of the world. What could one say about him expect that this was a form of greatness?”
